Scores of Elections Officers, who worked the November 2 elections in Charlottesville, have not yet been paid for their efforts.
Inquiries submitted to City financial staffers have been met by generic “check’s in the mail” responses going back several weeks. For the roughly 100 workers still waiting for their $200+/- remuneration, that’s small consolation.
Whether the problem is laziness, incompetence, indifference, or staff shortages, this breach clearly is unacceptable.
At a time when localities face enormous challenges in securing Elections Officers—and in a state where elections are held at least annually—stiffing essential workers is a self-defeating strategy.
