MicroCAT (MC), a relatively new transportation service collaboration between Charlottesville City and Albemarle County, has a “law” problem.
Following MicroCAT’s fall 2023 launch, a Schilling Show investigation exposed MC for driving vehicles with expired, out-of-state tags. While that situation eventually was rectified, a new breach has emerged at MicroCAT: violation of Virginia license plate display laws.
Today, of seven MicroCAT fleet vehicles after-hour parked on Rio Road, none bore the legally required front license plate.
Virginia Code § 46.2-715. Display of license plates, delineates:
License plates assigned to a motor vehicle, other than a moped, motorcycle, autocycle, tractor truck, trailer, or semitrailer, or to persons licensed as motor vehicle dealers or transporters of unladen vehicles, shall be attached to the front and the rear of the vehicle. [emphasis added]
Institutional arrogance continues unabated in both Albemarle County and Charlottesville City. While these localities routinely cite motor vehicle operators for sundry violations, MicroCAT openly flouts Virginia Vehicle Code as enforcers quietly look away.
Rules for thee, but not for me…
